Serve Robotics announced on August 17, 2026 that its sidewalk autonomous delivery robots will carry orders from the Grubhub marketplace. Grubhub is a subsidiary of Wonder. The same release said Serve has launched in Washington, DC and San Jose, and opened its first micro-depot in Miami.

Where the robots are going
Serve says more than 100 participating Grubhub merchants in Chicago and nearly 200 in Los Angeles now offer robot delivery, and it expects more restaurants to join over time. In Washington, DC, robots deliver in Dupont Circle and parts of downtown. In San Jose, its first Bay Area market, robots have completed a first month of deliveries. Both new markets launched with DoorDash, not Grubhub.
Serve spun off from Uber in 2021. Its boilerplate says it has deployed more than 2,000 robots in the US, reaches about 3 million people, and supports more than 4,000 restaurants. Washington, DC and San Jose are its seventh and eighth major US markets, and the release says the two metros reach a population of 8 million. The release lists Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Washington, DC, and San Jose as major markets.
Micro-depots and the Beacon box
Serve describes a micro-depot as a small site for staging, charging, dispatch, and maintenance. The company says these sites need little infrastructure and give it a lower-cost way to enter new areas. The Miami depot is the first.
The release also previewed Beacon, a countertop device for restaurants. It has built-in cellular connectivity, alerts staff when a robot arrives, and needs only power. Serve says it targets restaurants that could not support robot delivery before.
Why It Matters to You
- If you order from a participating Grubhub restaurant in Chicago or Los Angeles, or from the Wonder location in Alexandria, Virginia, a sidewalk robot may bring your food. It depends on the restaurant and your address.
- In Washington, DC (Dupont Circle and parts of downtown) and San Jose, robot delivery is live through DoorDash.
- Restaurants that couldn’t support robot delivery before may get a way in through Beacon, but it’s only a preview with no price or date.
What the numbers leave out
Every figure here comes from Serve’s own press release, and we found no independent audit of the robot count, population reach, or restaurant count. “Reach” means the population of the metro areas Serve serves, not that 3 million people can order a robot delivery to their door. The release doesn’t say how many robots operate in Washington, DC or San Jose, discloses no fees, commissions, or delivery prices for restaurants or customers, and offers no data on safety, delivery times, or reductions in car trips. Claims about savings for small restaurants or customers have no support in it.
Quick answers
Can I get a Serve robot delivery from any Grubhub restaurant? No. Serve says robot delivery is available from participating merchants in Chicago and Los Angeles, and at one Wonder location in Alexandria, Virginia. Availability depends on the restaurant and your address.
Does robot delivery cost less? Serve has not published pricing or fee terms in this announcement, so we can’t say. Check the fees shown in the app at checkout.
What is the Beacon device? A countertop unit that tells restaurant staff when a robot arrives. Serve says it needs only a power outlet. The company has shown it as a preview and has not given a price or launch date.
Which cities does Serve operate in? The release lists Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Washington, DC, and San Jose as major markets, and names Alexandria, Virginia for the Wonder location.
