Carno III is a 45 MW wind farm with 10 turbines in Powys, mid Wales. Construction has started, and trade reports say completion is expected in autumn 2027.

Who is building it, and what it involves
The owner is Carno 3 LLP, a joint venture between Amegni Renewables and Gresham House. Total project cost is more than £100 million. Contractor Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK holds a £46.5 million contract for the civil works: turbine foundations, an on-site substation and control building, and cabling. It also covers upgrades to more than 4.4 km of existing access tracks and 4.7 km of new tracks.
Jones Bros is also laying 20 km of new underground cable between Welshpool substation and a connection point south of Abermule. That strengthens a section of the mid Wales 132 kV grid operated by SP Energy Networks. The company says it is its highest-value wind contract in Wales to date. Up to 90 people, including apprentices, will work on its part of the build.
Carno III is one of three Carno wind farms operated locally by Amegni. Together the three will have 78 turbines and nearly 100 MW. Jones Bros is building Carno III only, not the whole cluster.
Community money and land
The developers report a community benefit package of more than £3.5 million over Carno III’s life. Separately, the three Carno farms together will pay £250,000 a year in community benefits to mid Wales. The project also includes more than 350 hectares of habitat enhancement and peat restoration, and Amegni reports over £50 million in contracts awarded to Welsh businesses and individuals.
Why It Matters to You
- If you live in mid Wales, the community benefit package is meant for your area, but the reports don’t say how grants will be awarded or who can apply.
- If you run a Welsh business, Amegni reports over £50 million in contracts to Welsh businesses and individuals so far.
- If you buy electricity in the UK, the farm isn’t generating yet. Completion is expected in autumn 2027.
What the figures leave out
The 46,000 homes and 65,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide figures are expected annual results from project reports, and the sources don’t explain the assumptions. The £3.5 million is a lifetime total, not an annual payment; the yearly amount is smaller and the payment schedule isn’t given, so we can’t say how much any one village or club will receive. The peat restoration and habitat figures are plans, with no independent measurement of results. Timing is also contested: Energy Live News headlined its report “operational this autumn,” while Jones Bros’ announcement and Construction Review say completion is expected in autumn 2027. We follow the contractor and couldn’t resolve the difference from the headline alone.
Quick answers
Is Carno III generating power yet? No. Construction has started, and completion is expected in autumn 2027.
Who owns it? Carno 3 LLP, a joint venture between Amegni Renewables and Gresham House.
How big is the community fund? More than £3.5 million over the wind farm’s lifetime, according to the reports. Application rules are not published in the sources we checked.
What does “46,000 homes” mean? It is the expected annual electricity output expressed as the usage of an average home. It does not mean 46,000 homes connect directly to the turbines.
