New York Approves Meter Socket Adapter Pilot

New York regulators approved a two-year pilot for meter socket adapters, devices that connect solar, batteries and EV chargers at the meter. Applications start June 1, 2027.

New York has approved a statewide pilot for meter socket adapters. These are devices that sit between a home’s electric meter and the meter box. They let a solar inverter, a home battery or an EV charger connect at the meter instead of at the main electrical panel. The goal is to avoid some panel upgrades, which can add cost and delay to a home energy project.

What the Commission approved

The Public Service Commission took up the matter at its September 17, 2026 session as item 377 on its consent agenda. The case is a petition from ConnectDER and Tesla, filed in August 2024, to set up a statewide process for approving adapter models (Case 24-E-0526). The Commission had ordered the utilities to file an implementation plan in September 2025.

According to a summary by the industry site mgrid, the pilot works as follows:

  • It runs two years and applies statewide across the six Joint Utilities: Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, National Grid’s Niagara Mohawk, Orange and Rockland, and Rochester Gas and Electric.
  • The first residential interconnection application using an adapter can be filed June 1, 2027.
  • Only adapters on a utility-approved list qualify, and each service gets one adapter.
  • Hardware must meet UL 414 and the National Electrical Code. Units that can run during an outage need additional UL certification.
  • Each utility keeps final approval authority in its own territory.
  • The utilities file a report on operational impacts and safety concerns after the pilot.

Panel upgrade versus adapter

Where the new equipment connects At the main panel, which is upgraded to carry the load At the meter, between the meter and the meter box
Cost and delay Adds cost and can mean waiting on contractors and inspections May avoid some of that; no sourced New York price for either route
Limits Works for any home that can be upgraded Approved models only, one per service, capped by the service entrance rating

Why adapters get attention

Older homes often have main panels that cannot carry the extra load from a heat pump, an EV charger or a solar and battery system. A panel upgrade fixes that, but it adds cost and can mean waiting on contractors and inspections. An adapter gives installers another connection point at the meter.

Cost comparisons vary. The one sourced figure comes from a Canary Media report in December 2025, cited by mgrid. It said Tesla’s Backup Switch saves about $335 in hardware and $360 in labor on a battery storage installation. That is one product in one use case. There is no sourced price for the adapters themselves, or for a typical panel upgrade that applies across New York.

Adapters are already being used or reviewed elsewhere. An April 2026 opinion piece by Ivo Steklac, CEO of adapter maker ConnectDER, said New Jersey, Maryland and Connecticut have adopted rules for evaluating and approving these devices. Because Steklac’s company sells the technology, treat that as an industry view.

Why It Matters to You

If you own an older New York home with a crowded main panel, adapters could eventually make a solar, battery or EV charger project cheaper or faster. Not yet, though. This is a two-year pilot, and no homeowner can file an adapter-based application until June 1, 2027. Your installer will need a model on your utility’s approved list.

Where it falls short

This is a pilot, not a finished program. Savings depend on the home: an adapter helps only where the main panel is the obstacle, and the utility must have approved the specific model. According to mgrid’s summary, testing beyond the standard process is paid by the applicant, and customers may have to share adapter telemetry with the utility at no cost. The primary Commission order was not accessible. The date and item come from the Commission’s September agenda, and the pilot terms come from mgrid’s summary of the order. Earlier-reported details such as an October 5 approval date, a $600 adapter price and a one-hour install time could not be confirmed.

Quick answers

When can I use a meter socket adapter in New York?

The first adapter-based application can be filed June 1, 2027. Your installer will need a model on your utility’s approved list.

Will an adapter replace a panel upgrade for every home?

No. It helps where the main panel limits a project. The service entrance rating still caps what can be connected, and adapters cannot be stacked.

How much will it cost?

No sourced New York price exists yet. Ask installers for a quote that compares both routes.

Which utilities are covered?

The six Joint Utilities listed above. Each one keeps approval authority in its own service area.
