Ever call a restaurant just to ask how long the wait is, then sit on hold for five minutes before anyone picks up? Yelp thinks an AI agent can make that call instead.
On October 20, 2026, Yelp announced Check for Me, a new feature inside its 2026 Fall Product Release. An AI voice agent dials an eligible restaurant, asks about the current wait, and texts you the answer, usually within a few minutes. Yelp’s own blog post confirms the feature, and TechCrunch independently reported the same rollout that same day.
How Check for Me Works
Using Yelp’s Check for Me feature doesn’t take much. Here’s the process, based on Yelp’s own description:
- Open an eligible restaurant’s page in the Yelp app.
- Tap “Check wait time now.”
- Enter your party size and phone number.
- Yelp’s AI agent calls the restaurant and asks about the current wait.
- You get a text back with the answer, usually within a few minutes.
No hold music. No standing around while someone tracks down the host. You type in a few details, and the agent handles the back-and-forth for you.
That said, this isn’t live everywhere yet. Yelp says the feature is rolling out “in the coming months,” limited to U.S. restaurants where walk-ins are possible, and only through Yelp Assistant on iOS. If your go-to spot doesn’t take walk-ins, or you carry an Android phone, you won’t see this yet.
Picture Theo, a dad juggling two kids and a hungry dog at home on a Tuesday night. He’s an illustrative example, not a real person. He wants pizza after a long day, but he dreads calling ahead only to sit on hold. Check for Me means he could ask Yelp to find out the wait instead, then decide whether piling everyone into the car is worth it.
Part of a Bigger Fall Update
Check for Me isn’t a standalone launch. It’s one piece of more than 30 features Yelp announced in its Fall Product Release, covering both the consumer app and tools for business owners.
The same update lets Yelp Assistant book a table directly through OpenTable, at what Yelp says are tens of thousands of U.S. restaurants, without leaving the Yelp app. Users can also join a restaurant’s waitlist from inside the chat and get updates when a table opens up. A new “Keep Me Posted” option sends recurring recommendation reminders, and Yelp Assistant now remembers details from chats over the past 30 days, with full history “available soon,” according to Yelp’s post.
Yelp has sold an AI voice agent to businesses since 2025, mostly to handle incoming calls and leads. Check for Me points that same technology at the person doing the searching, not just the business answering the phone.
Small Business Trends covered the release from the restaurant owner’s side, noting it could help smaller spots capture diners who’d otherwise give up and go elsewhere. TechCrunch’s Ivan Mehta flagged a wrinkle worth watching from the diner’s side:
“Agent-to-agent communication might break down the conversation,” Mehta wrote, pointing out that a restaurant’s own automated phone system could end up talking to Yelp’s agent instead of a person.
What’s Not Confirmed Yet
- Rollout timing: Yelp says Check for Me arrives “in the coming months,” so it isn’t live on every eligible page today.
- Geography and platform: It’s U.S. only, and Yelp describes it as a Yelp Assistant feature on iOS. Nothing in Yelp’s post mentions Android.
- Price: Yelp hasn’t listed a cost for using Check for Me. The $30-a-month figure reported elsewhere applies to Smart Lead Reply, a separate paid tool sold to businesses.
- Accuracy: The answer you get depends on what the restaurant’s staff, or its own phone system, tells Yelp’s agent. As TechCrunch noted, two automated systems talking to each other can cause real confusion.
- Opt-out: Yelp hasn’t said whether a restaurant can decline to be called this way.
Why It Matters to You
Calling ahead to ask about a wait sounds simple, until you’re the one stuck on hold while a toddler melts down in the back seat.
- It could help people who find phone calls stressful, including people with social anxiety or hearing loss, skip a call they’d otherwise put off or avoid entirely.
- Parents coordinating dinner with hungry kids, or anyone short on patience after a long shift, gets an answer by text instead of playing phone tag.
- It costs nothing extra to try inside the Yelp app, but it’s still an early, limited rollout: not nationwide, not on Android yet, and only as reliable as what the restaurant actually reports back.
Yelp built its reputation on reviews people leave after a meal. Check for Me is a bet that the more useful moment is the one right before you walk in. Whether restaurants welcome an AI caller asking about their wait every single night is the part nobody has answered yet.
