USDT on Bitcoin via RGB: What Utexo’s Rollout Changes

USDT is planned to return to Bitcoin through the RGB protocol, with Utexo as issuer. Here is how RGB differs from smart-contract tokens, and which claims remain unverified.

Rusty padlock and chain securing a pair of blue doors

Reports in early October 2026 said Tether-backed Utexo would issue USDT on Bitcoin using the RGB protocol, with a rollout starting in October. We could not open a primary source, such as a Tether or Utexo announcement, so treat the launch details below as reported and unconfirmed. The design questions are worth understanding either way.

What is RGB, and how does it differ from other USDT tokens?

On Ethereum and Tron, USDT lives in a smart contract that Tether controls. Tether has used that contract to freeze addresses it flagged. RGB works differently. It is a client-side validation protocol that uses Bitcoin unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) to anchor ownership. Token holders keep their own proofs of ownership, and the Bitcoin network does not record a running balance for each holder. The token data and proofs stay off the main chain, in users’ hands.

Can Tether still freeze USDT on RGB?

Reports say there is no contract-level freeze switch. They also describe a shared list of flagged UTXOs that Utexo would maintain and send to exchanges. Enforcement then depends on whether exchanges honor it, so restrictions can still apply at exchange access points.

If that is accurate, the freeze power moves from a contract switch to a coordination problem. It does not disappear. Headlines saying Tether “can’t freeze” the token overstate what we can confirm.

Why It Matters to You

If you hold or send USDT, this could eventually give you a way to do it on Bitcoin rather than on Ethereum or Tron. Right now it is a reported rollout, not a confirmed one, and wallet and exchange support is limited. Anyone interested should check what their wallet or exchange supports before moving funds.

Is it live, and what else is planned?

The rollout was reported to start in October 2026, and it will not reach every wallet or exchange at once. We could not confirm the current status. Reported but unverified:

  • Utexo holds a commercial license to issue USDT on Bitcoin.
  • A Lightning Network integration is planned, with no firm date. Nothing here confirms it works on Lightning today.
  • Utexo says its direct swap from bitcoin to USDT prices close to spot market rates.

What can’t we say yet?

We found no independent test of fees, speed, or swap pricing for RGB-based USDT. Privacy from RGB does not remove legal or exchange compliance duties. Stablecoins also carry issuer, reserve, and regulatory risk. This article is not investment advice.
