Reddit is testing a new AI audio feature that reads posts out loud instead of making you scroll through them. Tap play, and an AI voice narrates the thread. You can listen with your hands and eyes free for something else.
The feature turns text posts and top comments into short narrated audio and video clips. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman says he noticed something happening online already: people were turning Reddit threads into podcast-style content on their own. Reddit decided to build that experience into the app itself. The company is testing it now on a small sample of posts in select communities. One example: an old r/boardgames thread about road trip games became a three-minute narrated video, as Engadget first reported.
Who Benefits From the Reddit AI Audio Feature
Commuters gain the most obvious win. A train ride or a stop-and-go drive turns into a chance to catch up on a thread. No more squinting at a phone screen while walking or driving. Parents cooking dinner or folding laundry can listen with their hands full instead of scrolling one-handed. Busy professionals can catch up during a walk instead of losing a lunch break to a screen.
People with dyslexia, low vision, or plain reading fatigue get an easier path into long threads. Reading a wall of text used to take real effort. Listening removes that barrier. That makes this a genuine accessibility gain, not just a convenience feature.
The bigger shift is what this removes: the need to sit still and stare at a screen to catch up on something interesting. A commute, a workout, a chore, these used to be dead time. Now they can become catch-up time instead.
Audio Is Becoming Everyone’s Shortcut, Not Just Reddit’s
Google’s AI-generated news briefings already give busy people their news without a single scroll. That shows how much people want to listen to things they used to have to read. Reddit is applying that same logic to its own communities. It likely will not be the last app to try.
Reddit says this is still an early experiment. The company wants to see whether people actually use it before expanding further. If it works, Reddit could become something people listen to on the way to work, the same way they already listen to podcasts and audiobooks.
For now, the rollout stays limited to a handful of communities. But the direction is clear. The app people scroll today could become the app people listen to tomorrow. That is good news for anyone whose day does not leave much room for reading.
