- Cost: No public product or pricing. The test moved 0.001 ETH.
- Availability: No product is available to the public. The test was a developer demonstration.
- Works with: Ethereum mainnet and a layer-2 rollup that Cointelegraph does not name.
- Status: Early-stage and unaudited. Gnosis Chain’s EEZ genesis is targeted for December 2026 or January 2027.
The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) is a design that aims to let a rollup and Ethereum mainnet interact inside a single transaction, with no bridge. In early October 2026, EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez reported a first mainnet test. Crypto.news says he announced it on October 5, and Cointelegraph reported it on October 6.
What the test did
According to Cointelegraph, the transaction was a cross-chain call from Ethereum’s main chain to a layer-2 network. It carried the ETH and updated a rollup’s state in the same step. Antuña Díez called it the first atomic cross-chain transaction of its kind.
“Atomic” means every linked step succeeds together or every step is reversed. There is no halfway state, so funds cannot end up half-moved. Bridges often lack that property, because a bridge transfer normally spans two separate transactions.
Jakub Gregus, co-founder of Hydration, called the demonstration “one of the most important milestones” in crypto. That is one outside developer’s view. Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst says that without synchronous composability, protocols must run separate deployments on each layer 2, which fragments liquidity (Cointelegraph’s paraphrase).
Who is building it
Gnosis and ZisK developed the EEZ framework, with funding from the Ethereum Foundation, according to Cointelegraph’s report on the GnosisDAO vote. That vote approved moving Gnosis Chain to an EEZ rollup. Gnosis Chain’s genesis was targeted for December 2026 or January 2027, per crypto.news.
What is still missing
The test moved 0.001 ETH, and crypto.news treats it as a technical demonstration, not proof of readiness for large-scale finance. The EEZ core-protocol repository calls the software an “early-stage implementation” that has not been audited, per crypto.news. At launch, Gnosis Ltd is expected to run a centralized composer that orders transactions and submits blocks for proving. That adds a trust assumption until real-time zero-knowledge proving is ready.
The first Gnosis deployment is expected to support atomic L2-to-L1 calls only, while the mainnet test went the other way, from L1 to L2. The full specification, with two-way composability, nested calls and real-time proving, is expected to develop through 2027.
Who Benefits and How
The people who would feel this first are developers building apps across Ethereum and its rollups, who currently have to run separate deployments on each layer 2. Everyday users could benefit later if apps stop needing a bridge, but nothing is available to them now. The first Gnosis Chain deployment is the nearest milestone, and it is expected to support only L2-to-L1 calls.
Open questions
- Which rollup took part in the test is not named in the coverage.
- Whether the centralized composer at launch will hold up as a trust assumption is unclear until real-time proving is ready.
- Audit timing is not stated.
- The coverage gives no typical bridge waits and no tests against named DeFi apps, so no comparison is possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use EEZ to move funds today?
No product is available to the public. The test was a developer demonstration.
Does this make bridges obsolete?
Not yet. The software is early-stage, unaudited and relies on a centralized composer at launch.
Is this investment advice?
No. It reports a technical test.
